What Candles Are Non-Toxic? A Straightforward Guide
If you've searched “what candles are non-toxic?” you've probably noticed there isn't one universally regulated definition of a “non-toxic candle.” That's why we think the useful question is simpler: What is the candle actually made from, and is the brand transparent about it?
What should you look for in a cleaner candle?
Start with the basics: wax, wick, fragrance standards, and clear ingredient information. At Forget Me Not, we make our candles with 100% soy wax, lead-free cotton wicks, and fragrance standards that exclude phthalates, parabens, and petroleum-derived wax.
Are soy candles non-toxic?
“Soy” describes the wax base; it does not automatically tell you everything about a finished candle. A soy candle can still vary widely by fragrance formulation, wick, dyes, additives, and the transparency of the company making it. We use 100% soy wax as the foundation of our candles and pair it with our established fragrance standards.
Are soy candles different from paraffin candles?
Yes. Paraffin is petroleum-derived, while soy wax is plant-based. Forget Me Not does not use petroleum-derived wax in our candles.
Do clean candles have to use essential oils?
No. “Natural” and “clean” are not interchangeable, and essential oils are not automatically the best choice for every candle or every person. We focus instead on the standards behind the finished fragrance and on being clear about what we choose not to use.
Can non-toxic or clean candles still smell strong?
Absolutely. This is one of the reasons Forget Me Not exists. We believe cleaner candle standards should not mean settling for fragrance you can barely smell. Our candles are intentionally developed for noticeable, room-filling scent.
What makes Forget Me Not candles different?
- 100% soy wax
- No petroleum-derived wax
- No phthalates
- No parabens
- Lead-free cotton wicks
- Strong, balanced fragrance performance
- Hand-poured in Chattanooga, Tennessee
And then there's the problem our customers mention constantly: choosing a scent. We built the collection so there wouldn't be one obvious favorite surrounded by filler. Finding a fragrance you love is usually easy. Leaving the others behind is harder.
So, what candles are “non-toxic”?
Rather than relying on one marketing term, look for brands that tell you exactly what wax they use, what their fragrance standards are, what kind of wick they use, and what ingredients they intentionally exclude. Transparency gives you something concrete to evaluate.
